Rural Revitalization and Deer Run Amok

Regionalizing economic development efforts, expanding broadband coverage and pushing hard on renewable energy are all keys to reversing a rural population decline, according to Dallas Tonsager, undersecretary for Rural Development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, who spoke at the annual meeting of the Nebraska Renaissance Project, a Lincoln-based nonprofit dedicated to rural revitalization. In other Nebraska news, a deer was shot to death by police after it broke through a window and went inside a mattress store in Lincoln. The deer caused about $1,200 in damages to the showroom merchandise before it was shot. No employees or customers were injured.
