Commission Approves Plan to Move Prairie Dogs

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission voted 8-1 at a meeting in Lincoln to allow the Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary to capture and move 100 wild black-tailed prairie dogs to its 5,000-acre property near Bassett. The ranch is owned by Audubon of Kansas.

Audubon officials will obtain the burrowing rodents from an existing colony at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge near Valentine. The state will incur no costs in the translocation effort, commission Director Rex Amack said.
