Nebraska News
Every Nebraska resident has 1,171,361 square feet of wide open space for themselves. That's one way of looking at the new population density figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau. Nebraska ranks 45th among the 50 states in population density, slipping from 44th in the previous census.
Of course the population density actually shrank as Nebraska's population grew by 115,078 people to a new total of 1,826,341. That is a growth rate of 6.7%, That was not as high as the 8.4% growth rate of the 1990s but much higher than the .5% growth rate of the 1980s. While Nebraska's growth rate was 3 full points behind the national growth rate of 9.7%, it was higher than the overall growth rate of the Midwest, which was just 3.9%. The rate for Kansas was 6.1% and Iowa's was 4.1%
Nebraska still ranks 38th among the states in population and it will retain all three House of Representatives seats. (Both Iowa and Missouri lost seats.) Detailed information on individual Nebraska counties will be coming out in February.
