Factoid
Despite being called Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and being referred to as "him" like all the rest of Santa's reindeer, Rudolf had to have been a girl. Why? Because all of Santa's reindeer had antlers and male reindeer shed their antlers in the fall. Female reindeer don't shed their antlers until spring when it's time to give birth. So any reindeer who have antlers in December are female.
Reindeer/caribou, by the way are the only female deer to have antlers. Both male and female reindeer shed their antlers once a year and they regrow them every year at the astonishing rate of around an inch a day.
