At 27.4 percent, Dawes County’s individual poverty level is more than twice the 12.3 percent average for all of Nebraska, and just above the 26.9 percent showing of Thurston County, home to the Omaha and Winnebago Indian reservations.
Statistically speaking the two counties are essentially tied in the poverty ranking, said David Drozd, research coordinator at the Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Omaha. “Thurston County…has been known to have a relatively high poverty rate for long time,” he said.
