Consumer Watch
As consumers begin to examine their buys more closely, a new online tool has been developed to track products from specific countries and their link to slavery.
What is slavery? Human Rights Education Associates (HREA) defines slavery as: "To be a slave is to be controlled by another person or persons so that your will does not determine your life's course, and rewards for your work and sacrifices are not yours to claim."
Where does the information come from? The website, ProductsOfSlavery, was developed by Anti-Slavery International, which found that 12.3 million people are in slavery worldwide. A world map on the front page can show slavery information by country or type of product.
Data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s 194-page report on child and forced labor worldwide is shown visibly through graphics for easy understanding. The website shows more than 122 different products made using child or forced labor in more than 58 countries.
A simple, printable products of slavery chart can be downloaded and printed for quick reference.
